Where do Microsoft product code names come from?

by Clint Edmonson on July 30, 2008

The internal code names for Microsoft products these days are always place names - things like cities, islands, countries, etc. This has been mandated to the development teams by our legal department. I suppose it provides us some protection from trademark or copyright infringement, as geographical names and places are by their very nature in the public domain.
